What Is Faith?

So what is Faith? I thought faith meant an unbroken inner confidence. A smooth feeling. If the feeling wobbled, the faith was defective, and you'd best not raise it at church.
Scripture doesn't seem to agree.
Mark 9:24. A father brings his son to Jesus and says the most useful sentence in the Bible: I believe, help my unbelief. He is holding both at once, out loud, to Jesus' face. Jesus doesn't send him away to sort out his position first. He heals the boy. The contradiction wasn't disqualifying. It was the prayer.
Matthew 14:28-31. Peter walks on water and then doesn't. Jesus asks why he doubted. But notice where Peter is while he's doubting. He's out of the boat. He's sinking, he's failing, and he's still the only one who left the deck. Doubt didn't keep him seated. It just made the walk ugly.
Psalm 73. Asaph says his feet nearly slipped, because he looked around and the people ignoring God appeared to be doing fine. He spends most of the psalm on envy and bitterness before anything resolves, and even the resolution is more a change of vantage point than an answer. It got into the songbook anyway. Someone decided the gathered people of God needed a hymn that admits the arithmetic doesn't always work out.
John 20:24-28. Thomas wants to see the wounds. Jesus turns up and offers him the wounds. No lecture about managing without them. He meets the man at his questions, then asks him to move.
Romans 4:19-21. Paul says Abraham didn't waver. Genesis 17 has him face-down laughing at the same promise. I've come to believe those two accounts sit together better than we usually allow. Whatever Paul means by not wavering, it evidently survived the laugh.
Here's the distinction I've landed on. Doubt is the opposite of certainty. Unbelief is the opposite of faith. They aren't the same thing, and treating them as the same has quietly flattened a lot of people who were doing fine.
Doubt says I'm not sure. Unbelief says I'm not moving. You can be deeply unsure and still show up, still pray badly, still love your neighbour, still hand the thing over one more time. That's faith working, not faith failing.
